Lightning Related FAQ

Question- Why does lightning fall?

Answer- Lightning “falls” due to a process called electrical discharge. It happens when there’s a difference in electrical charge between two regions, such as a cloud and the ground. Lightning occurs as a result of the buildup of electrical potential energy in the atmosphere. When the difference in charge becomes too great, it creates a conductive path for electricity to travel, and that’s when lightning strikes, moving from the charged region with excess electrons to the region with fewer electrons, typically from the cloud to the ground.

Question- Why does celestial lightning fall only towards the earth?

Answer- Celestial lightning doesn’t fall only toward Earth. Lightning is a natural electrical discharge that can occur on various celestial bodies with atmospheres, such as planets like Earth, Jupiter, and even Venus. It happens when there’s a buildup of electrical charge within the atmosphere, leading to a discharge, similar to how lightning occurs on Earth. So, celestial lightning can strike on other planets as well, not just Earth.

Question- Why does lightning strike?

Answer- Lightning strikes when there is an electrical discharge between charged regions in the atmosphere, typically between a cloud and the ground or between two clouds. It occurs due to the buildup of electrical potential energy and the need to equalize this charge difference.

Question- Why does lightning fall only on trees?

Answer- Lightning doesn’t only strike trees; it can strike various objects, including buildings, tall structures, and the ground. However, trees are often more vulnerable to lightning strikes because their height and moisture content can make them attractive paths for the electrical discharge. When lightning strikes a tree, the moisture inside can turn to steam, leading to explosive effects and sometimes causing the tree to split or catch fire.

Question- How to protect yourself when struck by lightning?

Answer- If you find yourself caught in a lightning storm, here are some safety tips:

1. Seek shelter: The best way to protect yourself from lightning is to get indoors in a substantial building or a car with a metal roof.

2. Avoid open areas: Stay away from open fields, hilltops, and bodies of water, as these are more likely to attract lightning strikes.

3. Don’t take shelter under trees: Contrary to popular belief, standing under a tree is not safe during a lightning storm. Trees can attract lightning and may conduct the electrical charge to the ground.

4. Stay low: If you can’t find shelter, crouch down low on the balls of your feet, making yourself as small as possible without lying flat on the ground. This reduces your contact with the ground and decreases the risk of ground current.

5. Avoid water: Lightning can travel through plumbing and electrical systems, so avoid using faucets, sinks, or electrical appliances during a storm.

6. Wait indoors: After the storm has passed, wait at least 30 minutes after the last clap of thunder before leaving your shelter to ensure the threat has subsided.

Remember, lightning is extremely dangerous, and it’s best to take precautions to avoid being struck in the first place.
